Transfer USD fund from Toronto Dominion Bank to Interactive Brokers

By xngo on April 29, 2019

As a Canadian, to transfer USD fund from your TD bank to Interactivebrokers.ca, you need to create a Borderless Plan account from TD. A USD denominated checking account from TD will not work. Before creating the Borderless Plan account, log into Interactivebrokers.ca and go through the electronic fund transfer process to ensure that your branch is listed. Not all branches are listed in Interactivebrokers.ca. Go to the branch that is listed from Interactivebrokers.ca and create the Borderless Plan account from that branch.

For me, here are the times it took for each process:

  1. From TD website, create Borderless Plan account took 15 minutes.
  2. Interactivebrokers.ca took 3 business days to establish the connection to TD bank, i.e. credit & debit small amounts.
  3. It took 1 day for the fund to transfer from TB bank to Interactivebrokers.ca.
  4. Interactivebrokers.ca will hold the fund for another 4 days before making it available for you to trade.

Note: If you don't want Interactivebrokers.ca to withhold your fund, use wired transfer. It will be instantaneous. Otherwise, funds delivered via ACH are subject to a credit hold of four business days on Interactivebrokers.ca side.

Update 2019-05-01:

  • TD USD denominated checking account is working too because I now see that Interactivebrokers.ca credited & debited small amounts in that account. Probably, I selected the wrong branch earlier. But it is too late now. I will continue to use the Borderless Plan account.
  • You have to be patient with TD. Transactions that are already executed are not immediately reflected on my account. For example, credit & debit small amounts took 1 day to show on my account. Transferred fund took 2 days for it to be removed(disappear) from my account.
